Thanos #1 Review

Thanos #1 Review

As much as the new Marvel NOW relaunch has been about pitting Marvel’s veteran heroes against the rookie newcomers, there’s also been a clear trend of putting major villains in the spotlight. Victor Von Doom has become one of the new Iron Mans. Venom is getting a new series next week and seemingly reverting to his villainous ways. And perhaps most significant of all, the mighty Thanos finally has a solo comic to call his own again. Thanos #1 serves as a solid beginning to the newest chapter in the Mad Titan’s life. Writer Jeff Lemire loosely builds on recent events in Thanos’ life, including his involvement in Secret Wars and his defeat at the Avengers’ hands in Civil War II. But none of that really matters except to establish a general status quo in which Thanos is eager to rebuild his reputation as the most feared being in the universe. Continue reading…

Dead Rising 4 Doesn't Have Campaign Co-op

Dead Rising 4 Doesn't Have Campaign Co-op

Dead Rising 4 will not feature campaign co-op, unlike previous games in the series. Via Destructoid, Capcom Vancouver producer David McAnerin fielded a question from a fan on a stream asking whether the fourth iteration will feature co-op play in the main campaign. “So, in the story mode, it’s a single player story mode, you’re going to play just as Frank…,” says McAnerin. “The four player co-op is our multiplayer mode. It’s a little bit inspired by the original Infinity mode for the old-school fans.” Continue reading…

The Flash: "Shade" Review

The Flash: "Shade" Review

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below. The Flash made some major progress on the villain front this week, with this episode giving more screen time to the mysterious Alchemy, furthering Caitlin’s transformation into Killer Frost, introducing Shade and even giving fans a brief taste of Savitar. But as often as this show struggles to do justice to one villain in any given episode, it’s not surprising that not everyone was given their proper due in “Shade.” The titular villain was easily the most disappointing element of the week. I’m plenty used to throwaway villains of the week by now. For all that this show does well, the writers have never really figured out how to treat the minor villains with the same depth and care as major foes like Reverse-Flash or Zoom. But even by the usual standard, Shade was a very bland, one-dimensional villain. He truly was a walking plot device, a character whose entire mission was to distract Barry and Team Flash while Alchemy worked his influence on Wally. There was no sense that Shade was an actual person with thoughts and motivations and desires of his own. Continue reading…
