The Tomorrow Children Review

The Tomorrow Children Review

It’s hard to imagine how the conversation went at the initial pitch meeting for The Tomorrow Children: “It’s a dystopian world where a girl—well, a clone—and her friends chop up resources, rescue Russian dolls, and rebuild the populations and towns overseen by a creepy overlord. Oh, and it’s got a distinct ‘50s Russian propaganda visual style. And it’ll be free to play soon, but right now you have to buy in.” Well, on the one hand you can see the inherent intrigue of the unique premise, but on the other that’s going to take some ‘splainin’. And that happens to be the first place where Q-Games’ (best known for the PixelJunk series) The Tomorrow Children falls down. This game of resource collection, town building, and, in fact, social engineering throws many resources, tickets, and currencies at you very quickly, but doesn’t provide an awful lot of explaining of their value or significance. We React to Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency

We React to Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency

As a part of New York Comic Con, BBC America took over The Theater at Madison Square Garden this morning for panels including Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency; Doctor Who; and Who spinoff series, Class (check out our separate coverage of those panels). Dirk Gently started the day off with, before the panel guests appeared, a screening of the premiere episode. Fans of the novels from which the show is adapted will immediately recognize that Gently has more of a relationship to the two Who series than merely airing on the same network. Douglas Adams (of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy fame) is the author of both Gently books and, at one point, worked on Doctor Who. Writer and executive producer of Dirk Gently, Max Landis, may be in the know now about that Adams connection, but early on during the panel discussion said that when he first read The Long, Dark, Tea-Time of the Soul (the second Gently novel), he had no idea. As Landis explained it, he was 12 years old at summer camp, told to find something to read, and found the only book there that “sounded like it was science fiction” – Tea-Time of the Soul. 14 Pictures of the Adorable Delsin Rowe Sackboy

Through the years, Little Big Planet’s intrepid mascot, Sackboy, has donned countless outfits in honor of other iconic PlayStation characters. This new collectible statue has him heading to Seattle to become none other than Delsin Rowe from Infamous: Second Son. We found him hanging out on the show floor at New York Comic-Con, so naturally, we couldn’t help but snap some photos of him. I mean, can you blame us? Sackboy is one photogenic dude, even when he’s pretending to be a surly, elemental power-wielding bad-ass. Here’s a slideshow of the images we got, plus a few more from the official Triforce website, where you can pre-order the statue right now. Continue reading…

Capaldi Introduces Doctor Who’s New Companion

Capaldi Introduces Doctor Who’s New Companion

New York Comic Con has expanded to a new venue this year, The Theater at Madison Square Garden, and what more appropriately sci-fi way to open the venue as a NYCC destination than with a series of panels including long-running British series Doctor Who as well as the new Doctor Who spinoff, Class. Both those shows air here in the States on BBC America and consequently were teamed with the networks new show, Dirk Gentlys Holistic Detective Agency (which we will cover in a separate piece). It was Class that started off the Whovian portion of the panels. The series focuses on a group of students at Coal Hill Academy (yes, that Coal Hill), and the four actors—Greg Austin (Charlie), Vivian Oparah (Tanya), Sophie Hopkins (April), and Fady Elsayed (Ram)—were all present for the panel. As they are students, the actors are a relatively young group (who apparently played Pokémon Go while on set), and in fact, it was noted that this is Oparahs first job. Continue reading…
